Before the station becomes a winter stage

The main hall still looks the same as always. But at night, when the station grows quieter, Christmas is already beginning here.

At night in the main hall

By day, Zurich hurries through the main station as always, to the platform, to the tram, home. But anyone walking through the hall late at night in these weeks notices that something is happening. Crates are rolled in, barrier tape is stretched, lifting platforms rise high. What is taking shape here can only be guessed at.

From 19 November, more than a hundred market huts will stand here. It will smell of fondue and mulled wine, and the hall will become a meeting place for everyone looking forward to Christmas. To make sure this Christmas market shines in the right light, auviso is already at work.

Christmas is coming

From 9 November, the auviso team gets to work in the main hall, taking care of the lighting, the sound and a few more surprises.

What it will all look like remains a little secret until the opening. But there will be that moment when you stop between the market huts and simply marvel. Because suddenly everything feels like Christmas.

So that the magic works every day, light and music run to a fixed schedule, and a team keeps an eye on everything remotely. From the first to the last market day. To ensure everything runs smoothly, the team has been planning, testing and preparing for months.

“The nicest compliment is beaming faces. And if part of that glow comes from our technology without anyone thinking about technology, we have done everything right.”

Built while Zurich sleeps

A large part of the work happens at night. Most people are asleep, but the station stays in operation. Every move has to be right. Last year, around 15 tonnes of material came into the hall this way. Around 15 tonnes of material are installed in the roof and on the floor, and careful planning is an important prerequisite for everything to run smoothly.

Large halls, tight time windows and an audience that should notice none of it – auviso knows all that. Since 2003, the technical service provider from Emmenbrücke, with locations throughout Switzerland, has been providing image, light and sound for events and permanent installations. Polarzauber is auviso’s second time on board.

Almost there

Polarzauber opens on 19 November, and then it will show what has been created during all those nights. Until 24 December 2026, you can stroll through the market in the main hall of Zurich main station, with free admission. Come by and let yourself be surprised.
