Background

In late summer, our core team gathers in a light-filled loft in Zurich to capture the vision for Polarzauber on mood boards for the first time. Between sketches of glowing ice landscapes and initial prototypes of northern lights LEDs, it becomes clear that this is not going to be a run-of-the-mill Christmas market, but an immersive polar station in the middle of the city.

  • Mood board session: Inspiration from Scandinavia, vintage travel guides and state-of-the-art hologram technology
  • Container design: How steel huts with wooden cladding are transformed into cosy cabins
  • Technical check: Initial tests on a 1:50 scale mini model

When the first heavy-duty cranes arrive to lift containers into the station concourse, the real race against time begins. Electricians lay metres of cable, while decorators attach hand-carved reindeer sculptures and ice crystals made from recycled metal. Coordination is handled via tablet – a quick glance at the digital hall layout is all it takes to plan the next steps and tighten the last screws.

On opening night, the entire hall glows in the soft green and violet hues of the Northern Lights. It's a moment when all the months of planning, the nights spent fine-tuning details and countless cups of mulled wine finally pay off. Visitors stand in awe, and we know that Polarzauber is ready to bring winter dreams to life.
